The encounter between comedian Adam Friedland and Congressman Ritchie Torres of the Bronx felt like a spectacle: part truth-telling, part theater, meant to unsettle power and expose hypocrisy. Torres, the first openly gay Afro-Latino U.S. Congress member, went on Friedland's talk show to speak about his district, his personal journey and his political outlook. But the appearance, perhaps predictably, became a precursor to the subject Torres has embraced most aggressively since October 7: unwavering support for Israel.
