But in the end, Mario Cristobal’s team found a way to put an end to an eight-game losing streak against top-10 teams, as the No. 10 Hurricanes defeated No. 6 Notre Dame 27-24 on Sunday night, joining in-state rival Florida State in delivering the ACC’s two biggest wins of Week 1. The Seminoles upset preseason No. 8 Alabama in Tallahassee on Saturday afternoon.
According to The Athletic’s College Football Playoff projections from Austin Mock, Miami improved its odds of making the CFP to 50 percent, ninth-best in the country. Meanwhile, Notre Dame’s Playoff odds dropped to 63 percent.
Transfer kicker Carter Davis, who was 2 of 7 on field goal attempts last season at Florida Atlantic, delivered the winning kick from 47 yards out with 1:04 to play, one drive after Notre Dame completed a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback.
“I get one play — I just have to capitalize on it,” said Davis, a South Florida native.
