Michael Mann has been one of the preeminent thinkers in the social sciences in recent decades, and is one of the leading scholars examining the relations between society, war and regime. In 2005, Mann, who teaches sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, published a book titled "The Dark Side of Democracy: Explaining Ethnic Cleansing," in which he examined some of the best-known cases of genocide and ethnic cleansing in the 20th century. These range from the genocide of the Armenian people, through the Holocaust and the genocide in Cambodia, down to the abominations in Rwanda and former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
