The intimation given by Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) to the National Stock Exchange India Limited about its decision to incorporate a wholly-owned subsidiary, Adani Electricity Puducherry Limited (AEPL), has reignited the debate on power sector privatisation in the Union Territory.

After reports emerged about AESL’s disclosure to the stock exchange on the incorporation of AEPL, Puducherry Home Minister A. Namassivayam was quick to convene a press meet on Friday evening to explain that the company’s disclosure had nothing to do with the earlier move of the territorial administration to privatise power distribution in Puducherry as the policy had been challenged in the court and the process was currently under litigation.
