Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim insisted his emotions in the immediate wake of defeat to Grimsby were behind post-match comments on Wednesday which have led to speculation this week over his future.

After United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in a penalty shoot-out loss to the League Two side, Amorim had said “something has to change” at Old Trafford after a frustrating run of results to start the new season.

Speaking on Friday, Amorim said: “Every time in the future we have one defeat like that I’m going to be like that, I’m going to say sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I defend my players and sometimes I think I cannot.

“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. I felt that in that moment, I was so frustrated, I was so annoyed.”

Amorim seemed positive and on the verge of almost being upbeat there. There was nothing revelatory, and, perhaps, he’s got used to the glare of the media after poor results.
