In the popular imagination of a family, youngest brothers are often looked at as carefree, fun-loving, responsibility-avoiding people, especially when compared to stereotypically overly responsible eldest daughters.

There are many factors at play here, but experts say there is some truth to the matter — but it’s more complicated than a total explanation.

“When we think about birth order or our role in the family, it can be oversimplified sometimes when it’s really such a layered issue,” said Joseé Muldrew, a licensed professional counselor and the founder of The Looking Glass, a private therapy practice in Georgia.

When you think about youngest siblings, and especially brothers, it may be perceived that they have fewer responsibilities. This may be because older siblings jumped in to take care of problems, but there are other factors, too — gender expectations, cultural practices, parenting styles — that also play a role, Muldrew said.
