The parents of a 7-month-old boy who was reported kidnapped in California earlier this month were charged with his death after prosecutors said the child was abused and succumbed to his injuries.

This is the second time the boy’s father has been accused of harming an infant, as he previously was found guilty of causing injuries so severe to his 10-week-old with another woman that the child is permanently bedridden. He avoided prison time for the crime.

“I will say that it was an outrageous, an outrageous error in judgment by this judge,” Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin told reporters Wednesday.

Jake Haro, 32, and his wife, Rebecca Haro, 41, were each charged with murder and filing a false police report in the suspected death of their infant, Emmanuel Haro. The boy’s disappearance went viral after his mother claimed he was kidnapped Aug. 14, but prosecutors said Wednesday that she made that up.

Rebecca Haro previously told KTLA that she and Emmanuel were in the parking lot of a sports store in Yucaipa, and that she laid him down in the back of her truck to change his diaper when she was attacked from behind.
