A man has been arrested after sending Lioness star Jess Carter racially abusive messages during the Women's Euros.

The England defender, 27, revealed she was 'scared to play' for the first time in her career after she suffered the abuse in the aftermath of the Lionesses' quarter-final victory over Sweden last month.

Police received reports of the racist messages and an investigation was launched by the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU), working in partnership with social media companies to identify the people responsible.

Today officers have arrested a 59-year-old man from Great Harwood, Lancashire on suspicion of malicious communications in relation to some of the messages.

He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
