The league's annual cutdown deadline forces all 32 teams to trim their rosters from 90 players to a lean 53 in preparation for the regular season. Each franchise has been making preparations for some time, and often the moves are simply a formalization of what was already expected for both the organization and players. But while there's no true finality to the proceedings – several veterans typically bounce back with the teams that dropped them, with many more young contributors catching on elsewhere or finding their way to practice squads – the day tends to mark the end of the line for a number of players who had hoped to carve out a spot for themselves over the summer.
