The last week of August in Italy will see further sultry heat followed by downpours across Italy, a a top weatherman said Tuesday.

First there will be African heat with temperatures reaching 42°C (106°F), followed by downpours and torrential rain.

This, in a nutshell, is the forecast for the last week of August according to Lorenzo Tedici, meteorologist and media director for iLMeteo.it.

Specifically, Tedici predicts "a new African heatwave on the major islands and locally in the central and southern peninsula, while in the North, a month's worth of rain will fall in a single day, with severe weather on several occasions from Thursday to Tuesday." Temperatures will rise significantly in the next few hours, particularly highs: in Sardinia, temperatures will reach 42°C by Thursday in the Cagliari area, 41°C in Oristano, and the heat will also grip the South and much of Central Italy.

In Sicily, we'll see peaks of 38°C, 37°C in Terni, and 35-36°C in Rome, with considerable humidity.
