Labour's push to bring in a new definition of Islamophobia risks social unrest, it has been warned.

Plans to come up with a description for the 'unacceptable treatment, prejudice and discrimination against Muslims' were put forward by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

But Fiyaz Mughal, the founder of Tell Mama, which monitors anti-Muslim hate incidents, cautioned last night that the proposal could create a 'blasphemy law by the back door', with a 'chilling effect' on free speech.

He is now leading a campaign against the proposal called Keep the Law Equal.

Labour signed up to a definition of Islamophobia while in opposition which suggests the term 'Asian grooming gangs' is racist.
