Move comes after Israel declared Brazilian president persona non grata for withdrawing his country from the International Alliance for Holocaust Memory

The Brazilian government does not intend to approve the appointment of a new Israeli ambassador to the country, the Brazilian newspaper Gazeta de Povo reported. This comes after the ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Zonshine, left office last week to retire.

According to the report, an advisor to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio (Lula) da Silva approved the move during a Senate hearing on Wednesday last week. Brazil currently has no ambassador in Israel.

This follows the Lula government's decision to remove Brazil from the International Alliance for Holocaust Memory (IHRA), announced in late July, which provoked strong worldwide backlash from Jewish entities.

Israel declared Brazilian President Lula a persona non grata when the president compared Israel's actions to those of the Nazis.
