A sunny bank holiday weekend typically calls for a bucket and spade and a trip to the seaside for thousands of families across the country.
And while many of those plans were realised in parts of Britain, some unlucky sunseekers were advised not to visit their local beach over fears they could be risking their health.
Cullercoats Bay in North Tyneside is normally packed to the rafters with a mixture of young and old using the North Sea breeze to cool off from the blistering heat.
But today it hosted just a smattering of swimmers and paddleboarders after locals woke up to messages advising them that the water was badly polluted.
While the warnings didn't deter everyone, it did enough to make Cullercoats Bay resemble a ghost town compared to beaches throughout the country.
