Peers who fail to turn up and participate in the House of Lords will be forced to quit as part of Labour's shake-up of Parliament's upper chamber.
Baroness Smith of Basildon, the Leader of the House of Lords, today outlined the Government's plans to go further in shrinking the size of the unelected chamber.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is already purging the Lords of the 92 remaining hereditary peers, who are entitled to their seats by right of birth.
But, once that is completed, a 'stage two' of reforms will see the introduction of a minimum retirement age of 80 for peers, as well as a 'participation requirement'.
Both were commitments made by Labour in the party's general election manifesto as part of efforts to 'modernise' the Lords.
