A dolphin has died and another has been rescued by medics after becoming lodged in thick mud four miles away from the sea.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) scrambled to the scene at Penpoll near the River Fowey, in Cornwall after receiving reports of two stranded dolphins on Tuesday.
The two mammals are believed to have become lost and disoriented in the intertidal muddy river system and struggled to find their way out.
Sadly, one of the mammals died, however, the other was recovered by medics, who used an airbed to support the living dolphin.
Rescuers managed to move the distraught animal with the help of locals who lent kayaks and a paddle board.
