The president took aim at a member of his own party on Sunday, slamming him for upholding a Senate norm that has obstructed the confirmation of Donald Trump’s preferred judicial nominees.
In a Truth Social post, Trump renewed critiques of Senate Judiciary chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who has backed a tradition known as the “blue slip,” which prevents a district court judge or U.S. attorney nominee from advancing if a home state senator expresses their opposition.
When a senator supports a nominee, they return a form known as a “blue slip” indicating their backing, but if they oppose them, they either withhold the form or submit a negative review.
In practice, this policy gives senators in the minority a chance to sink picks that they disagree with, and has allowed Democrats to stymie some of Trump’s appointees from getting confirmed.
“Chuck Grassley should allow strong Republican candidates to ascend to these very vital and powerful roles, and tell the Democrats, as they often tell us, to go to HELL!” Trump wrote.
