Masked settlers, armed with clubs, emerged in the dead of night, setting cars on fire by igniting their engines. Soldiers who arrived an hour later fired tear gas at the residents who were still struggling to put out the flames
Mohammad Romaneh, a field researcher for the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem, says he had never before encountered a series of attacks by settlers as coordinated and well-orchestrated as those on the night of July 31. In three different Palestinian communities in the West Bank, dozens of residents awoke at the exact same time – slightly after 2:15 A.M. – and saw their cars going up in flames in the yards of their homes. The flames also licked the houses and endangered their occupants.
