Five people were killed and dozens more were injured after a tour bus returning to New York from Niagara Falls rolled over on a highway.

State police said 52 people were on the bus when the driver, who was “distracted” while on the New York State Thruway, lost control of the vehicle.

“It’s believed the operator became distracted, lost control and overcorrected,” New York State Police spokesperson James O’Callaghan said during a press conference.

O’Callaghan said the bus was driving at “full speed” but did not hit any other vehicles when it crashed and rolled over into a ditch. Many of the passengers were ejected from the bus, while others became trapped. Twenty-four people were rushed to hospitals in the area.

“There was glass all over the road and people’s stuff all over the road,” witness Powell Stephens told The Buffalo News.
