Six students have drowned and 24 have been injured during a school trip to an Egyptian beach.

Paramedics rushed to the beach in Alexandria, the country's second largest city, after reports that the students were struggling in the water, Egypt's health ministry has confirmed.

But six people were pronounced dead at Abu Talat Beach, a popular tourist spot, despite a large rescue effort by 16 ambulances.

At least 24 people were injured with three students treated on the beach and a further 21 taken to hospital.

Thirteen were taken to Agamy Specialised Hospital, with another eight treated at Amriya General Hospital.
