Lord Blunkett has said Keir Starmer should suspend the European Convention on Human Rights to deport thousands of rejected asylum seekers and finally 'get a grip' on the migrant crisis.
The ex-Labour home secretary urged ministers to take the 'radical' step as fury grows over the use of nearly 200 hotels to house 32,000 asylum seekers at taxpayers' expense.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, Lord Blunkett pointed to Germany and other nations that have temporarily set aside the ECHR and said Britain should do the same for six months if necessary to clear the ballooning asylum appeals backlog.
His intervention came as Nigel Farage set out a £10billion 'mass deportation' blueprint that would see five migrant removal flights leave the UK every day under a Reform government.
Dubbed Operation Restoring Justice, the five-year plan would block small boat arrivals from ever claiming asylum, detain them on surplus RAF bases, and force the state to build detention centres with capacity for 24,000 people within 18 months.
