Defence chiefs have agreed a multi-million pound compensation deal after troops started a fire in Kenya that devastated wildlife.

Absent minded soldiers started the blaze while cooking in a field. The flames ripped through a nature reserve and affected up to 8,000 acres of land.

According to unconfirmed reports at the time, elephants at the Lolldaiga nature reserve may have perished in the fire which raged for several days.

Afterwards, the Ministry of Defence funded an independent environmental report to assess the impact and restore the environment.

While a community fire prevention group was established to protect animals from further wildfires.
