A 38-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a 'suspicious substance' found under a car led to dozens of families being evacuated from their homes.

A specialist army bomb squad carried out controlled explosions in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, after an object was discovered beneath a vehicle on Saturday afternoon.

Around 50 homes were cleared, and a 100-metre cordon was put in place on Cowley Hill.

Residents described being given just minutes to flee their homes, some still in pyjamas.
