A serial pothole vigilante has begun painting over his local holes in the road with a St Georges Cross in a fresh bid to force his local council to fix them.

Ben Thornbury, 20, is known for his unconventional methods of drawing attention to potholes, and has come up with the new tactic in his home town of Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

In an eyecatching stroke, Mr Thornbury first paints over the holes in white before adding a red cross.

He is well-known in the area for his pothole crusades, having previously staged public events and individual protests.

In February last year, Mr Thornbury sat in a camping chair wearing a mask of his then-local MP James Gray.
