Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Gov. Ron DeSantis has appealed an order from a federal judge to close the mass Florida Everglades detention facility colloquially known as "Alligator Alcatraz" within 60 days.

Florida officials filed the appeal hours after preliminary injunction handed down Thursday by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, ordering Florida and the Trump administration to wind down operations at the South Florida Detention Facility at Cypress National Preserve in Ochopee.

Williams ruled that authorities must halt construction and stop the transfer of new inmates to the facility.

The DeSantis administration filed notice with the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, although court documents do not detail the the nature of the state's argument.
