Critics say that Trump has surged law enforcement to highly visible parts of the city frequented by tourists instead of the lower-income areas where crime occurs most often, although the White House has disputed this. Starnes praised Trump’s D.C. crackdown, dismissing protests against it as an example of “Trump derangement syndrome,” even though violent crime in the city is at a 30-year low.“Because I sent in people to stop crime, they call me a dictator,” Trump complained. He referred to the influx of National Guard troops as “a sort of test” that was “working unbelievably, much faster than we thought,” hinting once more that he may try to send in troops to other metropolitan areas run by his political enemies.“We’ve arrested hundreds of criminals — hardline criminals, people that will never be any good, I don’t care what they say. They say, ‘Oh, rehab.’ They’re not going to rehab these people. They were born to be criminals. That’s all they are,” Trump said. While the White House releases some information about D.C. law enforcement actions, basic questions about who is being arrested are going unanswered.
