President Donald Trump recently unleashed a heated rant on social media over mail-in ballots and voting machines, while baselessly casting doubt on the integrity of U.S. voting systems. One expert in voting rights says his latest tirade is “alarming.”
On Monday, the president took to his Truth Social platform to claim — without providing evidence — that mail-in voting leads to “MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD,” and that voting machines are highly “inaccurate.” And he vowed to get rid of both systems, which are widely used in election jurisdictions across the country. The president further claimed in his post that mail-in ballots are a “scam” and a “hoax” and that Democrats are “virtually unelectable” without the use of mail-in voting.
The president has, for years, repeatedly spewed false claims and conspiracies about voter fraud, namely that the 2020 election had been stolen from him, despite evidence proving that former President Joe Biden’s election victory was legitimate — and despite the fact that experts agree that election fraud is extremely rare in the U.S.
What’s more, Trump’s allies had reversed course and actually encouraged voters to use mail-in voting in 2024 after the president had previously tried to discredit mail ballots following his 2020 election loss. Not to mention, Trump cast his own absentee mail ballot in Florida in 2020.
