The Kerala High Court has extended to August 25 the restraint on arrest of Hirandas Murali, a Malayalam rapper popularly known as Vedan, who was recently charged with sexually assaulting a woman doctor multiple times on the promise of marriage.

This was after the counsel for the doctor sought more time to submit details of personal chats between the doctor and Vedan. When her counsel submitted yet again that two other women also had raised similar allegations against the rapper, and sought that he be considered as a ‘habitual offender’, the court told her to argue within the confines of her client’s case. It said that courts took decisions on the basis of evidence that was presented before them and that a criminal case cannot be registered on the charge of withdrawal from a promise of marriage.
