Two rights groups petitioned the High Court of Justice against a Border Police commander, demanding that he let Palestinians from East Jerusalem into Israeli hospitals for treatment.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel and the Center for the Defense of the Individual petitioned the commander of the unit responsible for the area around Jerusalem, Brig. Gen. Iran Levy, demanding that seriously ill residents of Kafr Aqab and other villages be allowed to go through the al-Jib checkpoint.
According to the petition, the previous commander allowed patients to pass through the al-Jib checkpoint, but Levy chose not to continue his predecessor's policy. Now, patients are required to reach the emergency room or for life-saving treatment through the busy Qalandiyah and Hizma crossings, forcing them to wait for two hours or more.
