The Gruha Jyothi scheme, one of the five flagship guarantee programmes of the Congress-led government in Karnataka, has completed two years. In this period, the scheme has provided free electricity to over 21.41 lakh households under the jurisdiction of the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM).Launched on August 1, 2023, with registrations starting from June 18, 2023, the Gruha Jyothi scheme provided free electricity up to 200 units per month to eligible consumers.On August 19, GESCOM Managing Director Krishna Bajpai said that around 21,94,217 people had registered for the scheme as of July 31, 2025, of which 14,08,767 beneficiaries are receiving a zero electricity bill, and 7,32,847 are Net Bill (Partial Bill Payers). Collectively, these beneficiaries have consumed 2,453.51 million units of electricity, translating to a total bill value of ₹2,327.42 crore — an amount entirely saved by households.
