CCTV footage shows the victims being attacked by several assailants while exiting a taxi near the Sheraton Manila Bay hotel

Philippine authorities have launched a special investigation into the fatal shooting of two Japanese men in one of Manila’s busy entertainment districts, after CCTV footage captured a coordinated attack that is believed to involve at least four assailants.

The double homicide occurred late Friday night on Miguel Malvar Street in the capital’s Ermita district – a popular area for tourists and nightlife – and near the five-star Sheraton Manila Bay hotel.

The unit tasked with investigating the murders, Shooting Incident Task Group Malvar, recovered a getaway vehicle on Saturday that had been abandoned a few hundred metres from the scene, according to a statement by Police Major Philipp Ines, spokesman for the Manila Police Department (MPD).

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and MPD’s special task group said they would “continue [their] focused efforts until all persons of interest are accounted for and justice is served”.
