The Assam unit of Congress has urged Home Minister Amit Shah to strengthen the security measures along the State’s border with Bangladesh amid increasing cases of infiltration.

Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the 126-member State Assembly, expressed concern over the pushback operations by the Assam police since May.

“While the State government has repeatedly acknowledged the deportation of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals, the situation raises serious questions about the effectiveness of existing border management frameworks and coordination between agencies,” he wrote in a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday (August 16, 2025).

Mr. Saikia said the Assam Government announced the new pushback strategy on May 10, reportedly sending more than 300 Bangladeshi nationals who entered the country illegally back by August 3.
