In his address on the eve of the 79th Independence Day celebrations, Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi on Thursday (August 14, 2025) flagged four “very serious challenges” facing the people of the State – educational and social discrimination of the poor and marginalised, alarming rise in suicides, fast-spreading drug abuse among youth, and a steep rise in rape and other sexual offences against women and girls.

He contended that year on year, the ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) revealed the “shocking reality” that the learning outcome of our students in government schools were “far lower than the national average.” He contended that the “public education ecosystem in Tamil Nadu is on steady decline.” The learning gap between the socially and economically marginalised and others is sharply widening, he said.
