The other day somebody asked me what my favorite thing is about Israel. To him, it was weird that I moved here, when so many Israelis think about leaving amid Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial coup and the Gaza war. My response was that it's the heaviness and the sadness in the air pretty much all the time, the honesty with which people carry the pain of October 7 and almost two years of war. Everybody's trying very hard to be fine, but within two minutes of speaking, through defiant jokes, you realize nobody is.
