The Cauvery delta, which accounts for nearly 50% of paddy coverage in the State during the Kuruvai cultivation season, has achieved a record coverage this time with the extent of area exceeding six lakh acres.
The normal coverage in the delta is 4.4 lakh acres. As of August 10, the present coverage was 6.09 lakh acres, marking about 40% higher than the normal. Of about 6 lakh acres in the region, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur distrticts account for nearly two lakh acres each.
Last year, the coverage in the delta was only around 3.88 lakh acres. Compared to the previous year, the existing coverage is around 57% more. The previous high was 5.6 lakh acres, which was recorded during 2023-24.
Water availability
The reason for such an impressive performance this year is not far to seek. The availability of the Cauvery river water in plenty has made a huge difference, even though there are reports of the tail of the river system having not received its share of water. As in the previous years, the State government has, this time too, provided a special package of assistance to farmers during the season.
