Forecaster raises red rainstorm signal at 11.10am, says No 1 typhoon warning will be cancelled at 12.20pm
Hong Kong experienced disruptions after a black rainstorm warning signal was issued on Thursday morning, leaving several areas flooded and prompting authorities to cancel classes and some flights.
The Hong Kong Observatory replaced the highest-level signal raised at 7.50am with red at 11.10am. It also said that the No 1 typhoon warning signal currently in effect would be cancelled at 12.20pm.
Red warning signal means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 50mm (2 inches) in an hour.
“There is an exceptionally severe rainstorm in Central and Western districts, and severe rainstorm in Chek Lap Kok of Islands district, Kwai Tsing and Tuen Mun districts. It may cause serious flooding,” the Observatory said, adding hourly rainfall was expected to exceed or had exceeded 100mm.
