Exxon Mobil is eager to supply gas from its US production fields to power generators serving data centers but only if that electricity can be decarbonized.

"We're interested in data centers, not from the power standpoint but for our ability to decarbonize ... and to the extent that these hyperscalers want decarbonized power," CEO Darren Woods said during the supermajor's second-quarter earnings call last week.

If the power from the gas-fired generators serving these data hubs cannot be decarbonized — either through carbon capture and storage (CCS) or other technologies — "I wouldn't see us getting into that business," Woods said.

Expanding CCS Footprint

Exxon and its supermajor rival Chevron earlier this year announced plans to enter power-supply markets, a seeming departure from long-stated strategies of not moving into the electrons business.
