The public would likely back increasing defence spending if they fully understood the current perilous state of its military capabilities, a former Nato boss said.
George Robertson signalled Britons are largely 'unaware' of the need for a defence spending boost amid mounting global uncertainty.
It marks further support for the Daily Mail's Don't Leave Britain Defenceless campaign, which has lobbied successive governments to commit to boosting military spending, with defence chiefs warning the country cannot afford to delay.
And Labour peer Lord Robertson has backed Britain's decision to sign up to spending 5 per cent of GDP on defence by 2035.
But he said it would be especially painful for certain Nato member states, including the U.K.
