Nursery school children are to be able to pick the colour of their school uniforms in a gender-neutral move by authorities in a small town near Siena, the council said Monday.

Traditionally, Italian girls wear pink, and boys blue aprons.

From September the new entrants at nurseries at Torrita di Siena will be asked to choose between yellow, green and red instead, said the council.

"This will overcome gender stereotypes," it said.

The right-wing League party came out against the move saying "hands off our kids, enough ideology, get back to serenity".
