Five Al Jazeera journalists, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were killed in a “targeted” Israeli strike in Gaza City on Sunday.

Seven people died in the attack outside al-Shifa Hospital, including al-Sharif, reporter Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa.

“Al-Sharif, 28, was killed on Sunday after a tent for journalists outside the main gate of the hospital was hit,” a statement from Al Jazeera read.

“The well-known Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent reported extensively from northern Gaza.”

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed it had targeted al-Sharif, calling him a “terrorist” who “posed as a journalist”.
