Tesla Electric will likely integrate closely with the firm's electric cars and home batteries.
The company's energy subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures applied to regulator Ofgem for an electricity supply licence last month.
And it's possible Tesla could be supplying customers electricity before the year ends as the process can take anywhere from a matter of weeks to nine months. It has not applied for a gas supply licence.
