The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, has given a ‘fairly widespread’ rainfall forecast for North and South Coastal A.P. from August 13, and ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ forecast for the two regions on August 15 and 16.
An orange alert has been issued for the districts of Alluri Sitharama Raju, Prakasam, Palnadu, Krishna, Guntur, NTR, West Godavari and Eluru on the two days.
While no such alerts are given for Rayalaseema on August 15 and 16, an orange alert was in place for two districts, Annamayya and Tirupati, in the region on Sunday and yellow alert for the districts of Kadapa, Kurnool, Nandyal, Sri Sathya Sai and Anantapur, as moderate to heavy rain lashed different parts of Rayalaseema.
The IMD had been sending hourly alerts since Sunday noon, cautioning that strong winds, with a speed of 40-50kmph, along with lightning and thunderstorms, were likely in different parts of Rayalaseema till night. There are no alerts for the region for Monday.
As per realtime rainfall information available with the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), on Sunday, between 8.30 a.m. and 7.30 p.m., Veerapuram in Sri Sathya Sai district received the day’s highest of 97 mm rainfall. It was followed by Gangadhara Nellore of Chittoor district with 71.5 mm rainfall, and Rajiv Nagar sub-station in Nagari of Chittoor came close with 69 mm rainfall. Other places in the districts of Nandyal, Annamayya and Anantapur received around 45 mm rainfall.
