In the aftermath of the Covid lockdowns, the need for older workers seemed obvious. Companies were busily hiring and there was a shortage of young recruits.
Birth rates have collapsed in many countries around the world, prompting warnings there are too few young people to support an ageing population.
To many, one answer was to keep older employees in work for longer, with suggestions of more flexible working hours to assist them.
This year, things have changed, with reports of younger workers applying for dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of jobs without landing so much as an interview.
