A scientist died from a rare undiagnosed heart condition two days before Christmas after falling ill on a flight to a Caribbean island, an inquest heard.

Carla Longshaw, 39, was flying to the Dominican Republic with her 12-year-old son and a friend when she fell ill and the plane was diverted to Puerto Rico.

A coroner heard on Thursday how Ms Longshaw, who worked for Astra Zenica in Macclesfield, Cheshire, had been in hospital after suffering from low potassium levels.

A statement from her father detailed how she had collapsed at work on September 30 last year and was taken to Macclesfield Hospital.

She was discharged on October 2 and was prescribed antibiotics after being given 'apparently eight litres of potassium at 250ml per hour, as well as sodium chloride, vitamins and saline'.
