U.S. President Trump refuses trade talks with India until tariff issue is resolved, imposing 50% tariffs on Indian goods.

“No, not until we get it resolved,” Mr. Trump said in the Oval Office on Thursday (August 7, 2025) in response to a question on whether he expects increased trade negotiations with India.

The imposition of an additional 25% duty on India is a “national security issue” associated with New Delhi’s “abject refusal to stop buying Russian oil”, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has said.

Mr. Navarro, while talking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday (August 7, 2025), said it is important to understand that the “rationale for the India tariffs is very different from the reciprocal tariffs”.
