The cost of planning a trip can add up quickly. A survey from consumer finance company Bankrate shows that 46% of respondents said they are planning a summer vacation this year — down from 53% in 2024.
Sixty-five percent of those who don’t intend to travel this year cited money as the main reason.
In addition to the usual travel expenses like flights and accommodations, certain places around the world charge taxes and fees that are typically unavoidable.
“These taxes are generally intended to support local tourism infrastructure and services, such as public transport, maintenance of tourist sites, and environmental protection,” Melissa Ulrich, travel advisor and owner of You Pack, We Plan, a full-service boutique travel agency, tells CNBC Make It.
“They are legitimate fees and it’s important to be aware of those so there are no surprises at checkout.”
