The Lebanese Information Minister announced that the government had approved the goals laid out in the American proposal, which were intended to promote the gradual disarmament of Hezbollah and an immediate cessation of Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
According to him, the Lebanese government had approved the principle of concentrating weapons in the hands of the Lebanese national army alone, and had decided to deploy the army in southern Lebanon.
The minister emphasized that the implementation of all the clauses in the American document depended on each country fulfilling its relevant obligations.
The Information Minister referred to the departure of Hezbollah members during the meeting, saying that "we tried to convince our colleagues to stay, but they chose to leave the meeting, so that decisions would not be made in their presence."
The American proposal, which includes a four-stage plan and has been discussed in recent days by the Lebanese cabinet, would lead to Hezbollah's disarmament within 120 days, as well as an Israeli withdrawal from the disputed points along the border.
