A police chief has hit back at claims of a 'cover up' after two Afghan asylum seekers were charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton.

Alex Franklin-Smith, Warwickshire Police's chief constable, said the force 'did not and will not' cover up alleged criminality as he rejected the accusation by Reform UK.

The row came after The Mail on Sunday revealed that Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, was charged with rape.

Mohammad Kabir, also 23, was charged with aiding and abetting an assault, as well as strangulation and kidnapping.

Speaking on Monday, Reform leader Nigel Farage said it was 'absolutely disgraceful' that the police had not informed the public that the men were Afghan asylum seekers.
