A police watchdog is piling pressure on forces to publish the nationality and asylum status of criminal suspects.
Sir Andy Cooke, His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary, added his voice to calls for the police to be more transparent about the backgrounds of suspects.
The Home Office is currently working with the Law Commission, the College of Policing and the Crown Prosecution Service to review what information is released.
Sir Andy said a decision needed to be made 'very quickly' as he warned that failing to provide suspects' details could see a 'void of information' being filled by false claims.
He also said there was a risk of 'two-tier policing' claims if police released details in some cases but not others.
