Members of the Human Rights Forum (HRF) have strongly condemned the toxic gas leak that occurred at a pharmaceutical unit in the Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC) at Parawada in Anakapalli district, in which six workers were hospitalised. The incident took place in the early hours of August 4, 2025, around 3 a.m., when highly toxic fumes were accidentally released during the production process. According to HRF, the unit was handling extremely hazardous chemicals that require strict safety protocols and protective mechanisms, which were allegedly not followed, leading to the incident.

HRF members K. Anuradha and J. Rahman alleged that there was gross negligence in safety monitoring and enforcement, which they identified as the root cause of the gas leak. They also alleged that the hospital authorities denied the victims’ family members access and failed to provide timely updates on their health condition. Although the government has announced a committee to investigate the incident, the HRF expressed scepticism, stating that in previous cases such reports were rarely made public and hardly resulted in any concrete action.
