Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for becoming the longest-serving incumbent in his Ministry.

In his address to the National Democratic Alliance’s parliamentary party group, Mr. Modi noted that Mr. Shah has become the longest serving Home Minister, overtaking Bharatiya Janata Party veteran L. K. Advani, a co-founder of the group in 1998. “It is just the beginning,” he said, adding that there was a long way to go.

Mr. Shah has been at the helm since the Modi government took over for the second time in 2019, and his stint so far is of six years and 65 days. His tenure has been marked by several key decisions, such as the abrogation of Article 370, and actions on the internal security front, including a series of successful anti-Maoist operations.

The Union Home Minister also received compliments from his Cabinet and party colleagues. Congratulating him, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said: “...you have achieved a historic milestone. This historic achievement was recorded today, on August 5. On a similar historic day, August 5, 2019, you announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament, adding a new chapter to India’s history.”
